As a new generation of individuals with autism comes of age, I would like to see research regarding mentoring programs for teens and young adults with ASD. How can we promote mentoring programs within the autism community? How can we work to establish positive role models for youngsters with ASD? What kind of training and support is needed to make these programs effective?
On top of everything that one has to learn when caring for children with mental health issues, butting up against way-behind-the-curve school systems may be the worst. When 2 people are sick sometimes they could use cleaning help. Also someone to talk to about how they feel. It would be fun to do an outing with others. Friends don't always understand you don't always want to talk disabilities. Sometimes you want to talk abilities.
We know many family caregivers are employed and caregiving does have an impact on their ability to do their jobs. What are the best ways that employers can support the caregivers in their employ?
One area of support I find families need is how to navigate the grieving process. Some families are aware of where they are emotionally regarding their loved one and some do not seem to be aware at all, or are very good at hiding it. would like to see more research (and then knowledge to practice) about the factors that most impact the development of expectations by parents/siblings/family members for their loved one with a disability (is it parent to parent support? simply access to internet information? a teacher or rehab counselor?)
A single point person is needed within a patient's insurance company so the family caregiver has only to speak with one person who manages all the patients referrals and authorizations throughout medical management, member services and behavioral health. Establish training programs and credentials to prepare benefits planners to serve caregivers and PWDs from low and middle income families
Establish community-level "visitability" equipment loan programs so caregivers can borrow portable ramps,lifts, grab bars &c in order to increase options for family members to visit other inaccessible homes of friends and family
Develop training paradigms, plus prepare personal trainers, specifically to support family caregivers of persons with physical disabilities
